Common wasps are social insects and live in nests of up to 10,000 workers. They build a paper nest in hedge rows, animal burrows, garden sheds, lofts or cavity walls. Workers forage and feed larvae, cool the nest with water and fanning. Workers will aggressively defend the nest by stinging anything causing a disturbance. Unlike bees, wasps are able to sting repeatedly. The venom of the wasp contains a pheromone which acts as an alarm causing other wasps to become more aggressive. It is therefore a bad idea to attempt to treat a nest yourself. If you have a problem with a wasps nest, contact us now! Wasp

The common rat has a course, grey-brown fur with a light belly. Adults can grow up to 19cm long with a long tail. They live where they can find food, water and shelter. In homes, they can live in loft spaces, wall cavities, cellars or under floorboards. They will burrow into compost heaps, grassy banks or under sheds. They also live in sewers, are good climbers and swimmers. Favourite foods are cereal products, although they'll eat almost anything. They can cause damage by knawing and ripping packets of food. They can also contaminate food with urine and droppings. Rats can transmit many diseases to humans, including Salmonella, Toxoplasmosis and Weils Disease. Don't leave it to chance, get it treated today. Contact Active Pest Control now! Rat

The most common mouse found in buildings and homes is the house mouse. They are light brown and grey in colour. The body length varies between 60-90mm. The tail can add an additional 100mm. The droppings found are black, rod-shaped and 3-6mm long. Because mice are in effect incontinent - whatever they come in contact with, they will contaminate - transmitting diseases to humans (Salmanellosis for example). Mice also carry Leptospirsos (Weils disease), although it's not as dangerous as the form carried by rats. They can of course be destructive, ripping open packets in the search for food. Mice are able to squeeze through tiny gaps as small as 5mm. Don't put up with them, contact us now! Mouse

Grey squirrels were brought here from North America in 1876. Since this time, the red squirrel has been on the decline. It is not so much a case of the grey squirrel driving out the red, but more a case of being better equipped and more adaptable. Since being introduced, they have well established themselves in to our woodlans and increasingly into our homes. They cause damage and destruction as they go. Squirrels have well developed jaw muscles and chisel-like front teeth that can chew through just about anything including joists and wiring. They can also wake us up at night! This cannot be ignored and must be treated in a safe and humane manner, as your safety is at risk. Contact Active Pest Control for help now! Grey Squirrel

If you've ever had problems with moles, you will be aware just how hard it is to control them. Arriving from almost thin air, you wake up one morning to mole hills. Your perfect lawn is now a scene from 'battle of the Sohm'. Earthworms attract moles. Lawns are an ideal hunting ground. The worms are near to the surface and the network of grass roots supports extensive tunnelling. Establishing a centre, the mole or moles will work out digging several feeder tunnels. Once the basic network has been formed, they just sit back and wait. With an excellent sense of smell and hearing, they can detect a worm up to 5 metres away. As the worms drop into the moles tunnel, they become another tasty meal. If they've spoiled your lawn, contact Active Pest Control for help! Mole

Cockroaches are among the oldest creatures on earth. They are large, robust insects with whip-like antennae and two pairs of wings. The most common species in Britain are German and Oriental (the names have little bearing on the origin of the insects). Adult cockroaches live about 4-14 months, during which time females can produce up to 50 oothecae (egg sacs). Each ootheca contains 12-30 eggs. Cockroaches are implicated in the transfer of disease. They are bearers of pathogens such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus. They have been associated with outbreaks of Gastro-Enteritis, and Typhus, thus tainting human food. They are a public health pest and need professional treatment by experienced pest control technicians. Contact Active Pest Control now for a free survey. Cockroach

Fleas are blood sucking insects. Fleas are normally connected with a pet. Once a host is found, the flea will get on with its life cycle. At any given time about one third of the flea population in someone's home is present in the egg stage. The eggs are laid on the host. They fall off to hatch in the environment. The adult female flea lays up to 40 eggs daily. These then hatch into larvae. It is at this stage that they pick up the tape worm eggs. At any given time, about 57% of the fleas in someone's home are in the larval stage. After this they pupate into adults and the cycle is repeated. They will also feed on humans; causing itching, swelling and irritation - sometimes for days. Contact Active Pest Control now for a treatment. Flea

Bedbugs readily move from location to location on furniture, clothing, luggage and bedding. Also, holidays and that romantic weekend away in a country hotel could all potentially lead to an infestation of bed bugs. A female can lay 1-5 eggs a day and more than 200 in her lifetime of up to 10 months. They feed on humans during the night, using the carbon dioxide from our breath to guide them to the body, leaving you with a nasty rash when you wake up. They do of course live in beds; however, they can harbour a considerable distance from the host in plug/light sockets, behind beside tables, pictures and under skirting boards - to name a few. They therefore require a professional and experienced technician to deal with the problem. Contact Active Pest Control for help now! Bedbug
